THE ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP (UFC)

In The Beginning:

A tournament titled “War of The Worlds” was the idea that began The UFC. In 1993 Art Davie presented the idea to John Milius and Rorian Gracie, the theory was an 8 man tournament featuring all styles of fighting to see which was the “Ultimate”. Early on Senator John McCain saw a tape of the UFC and had it banned. There was a time that you could watch Porno on PPV but Not UFC. The early events saw tournament style formats including names like Ken Shamrock, Guy Metzger and the early Pioneer Royce Gracie. Royce would win numerous tournaments in the early days solidifying him and the Gracie family as stars and the iconic family of fighting. One of the main differences in pre zuffa days was that no weight classes existed. a 105 pound man could square off against a 250 pound guy.

The Zuffa Years

In January 2001 The UFC was on the verge of bankruptcy and Dana White and his friends the Fertitta brothers bought the company for $2 Million Dollars. They would start by utilizing rules, weight classes and building stars. They were struggling early on but the change would come when they aired a reality show on Spike TV called The Ultimate Fighter in 2005. The show featured 16 fighters living in a house w/ no contact with the outside world and getting world class training from top notch UFC stars. The Finale saw the fight between forrest griffin and stephan bonnar that catapulted the UFC into the main stream and earned a second season of the show on Spike. From there the UFC Machine showed no sign of slowing down w/ Superstars like Chuck Liddell, Georges St. Pierre, Jon Jones and probably the biggest of them all in Conor McGregor. McGregor and Ronda Rousey were instrumental in turning the UFC into a mainstream juggernaut. Ronda put Woman’s MMA on the map while Conor transcended the sport. In 2021 the company has never been bigger and holds pay per views monthly w/ fight nights almost weekly. The UFC is going stronger every day that goes by.
