UFC 272 is now in the books and the Ultimate Grudge match is officially in the rearview mirror. The card was heavily critizised already for being $75 and offering no Title fights. In the end the card was a stellar night of fights bosting new stars and some incredible action.
The main event saw the former American Top Team member Colby Covington take on former Best friend Jorge Masvidal. The two vowed to punish each other and promised thier foe would leave the octagon via a stretcher. After a week name calling, insults and personal attacks the two finally met in the middle of the octogan. The bout was largely centered around Colby’s superior wrestling although he did stand w/ Jorge intermittedly each round. The story of the fight was Colby’s constant pressure and Jorge’s inabilty to pull the trigger. Covington drug him down often and went for submissions but was unsuccessful. Jorge displayed great take down defense and had his moment in the fourth when he landed a huge left that sat Colby down but he was unable to capitilize and seemed to back off. In the fifth round Colby put a stamp on it by taking Jorge down and controlling him on the mat for 90% of the round. After the final bell the two were still jaw jacking and wanting to keep going.
In the post fight interviews Colby called for Dustin Poirier as his next opponent. Dustin in Jamaica chimmed in on Twitter and seems disinterested in the fight. For his part Jorge blamed the loss on simply not being himself and having an off night. In the post fight press conference Dana White announced the winner of Gilbert Burns Vs. Khamzat Chimaev will recieve the next title shot after Leon Edwards so that’ll leave some time for Colby to have at least one more fight before another title bout. As far as Jorge is concerned his best option is likely another grudge match this time w/ Leon Edwards providing he loses to current champ Kamaru Usman. Other bouts on the table could be a bout w/ Conor McGregor or possibly a rematch w/ Nate Diaz. Colby could fight loser of Khamzat / Burns or possibly Wonderboy.
In the evenings co main event there was an opponent change on 4 days notice. W original dancing partner falling out Renato Miocino stepped in on short notice to fight Rafeal Dos Anjos in a 5 rounder.
