SUNDAY JUNE 6TH 2021
on SHOWTIME PAY PER VEIW
FLOYD MAYWEATHER (50-0)
VS.
LOGAN PAUL (0-1)
FLOYD MAYWEATHER
Floyd Mayweather is the most successful boxer to ever grace the ring. He’s 50-0 and considered the greatest defensive boxer to ever live. He’s beaten all comers including a Exhibition bout w/ UFC Champ Champ Conor McGregor. In boxing he’s defeated names such as Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Victor Ortiz, Shane Mosley, Oscar De La Hoya and 40+ others. He’s been in movies, on television, competed at Wrestlemania and holds the top Pay Per Views in Boxing history.
LOGAN PAUL
In terms of boxing Logan Paul is the polar opposite of Floyd. He’s 0-1 (losing to another Youtube star). He made his fortune on youtube and now is a successful podcast host. To say he has no boxing skills would be inaccurate however to say he’s even in the same league as a Floyd Mayweather would also be a stretch.
This bout was originally scheduled to take place in February, however it was called off and many thought the bout wouldn’t happen. Showtime announced recently that the bout will in fact take place on June 6th. Currently there is no word on what sort of under card will be a part of the event though you’d have to assume there will be a few recognizable names to help boost the event. Between the two men in the main event it will draw numbers simply by name value alone. Most will be watching with the thought of “what if”. What if Paul actually defeats Mayweather? Will it be the biggest upset in sports history? Universally most consider Mike Tyson being defeated by Buster Douglas the biggest Upset in boxing history and you’d have to assume this would eclipse that by leaps and bounds. Its hard to imagine any event in sports history that would even come close to the magnitude of sheer shock that would overcome the world if Floyd loses in any fashion to a guy like Logan Paul. Again, Logan isn’t just a kid coming off his couch with no training. The man trains, he’s a smart kid and has one fight under his belt so he’s seen some big lights. I don’t mean in anyway to diminish the guy, in fact I personally like him. Its simply factual to state that a guy who’s had 1 fight (and lost to a youtuber) has zero chance against what most consider the best boxer who ever lived. Maybe you can put that up to a 3% chance because frankly nothing is impossible and we lived through 2020 so we know that statement has never been more true.
Lets look at some advantages Logan will take into this bout. Floyd is no spring chicken, the man is approaching 45 years old. The problem w/ that in Logan’s eyes is that Floyd is not your average 45 year old man. He still trains and his in incredible shape. But again, he’s still push 45 and no matter how you look at it that’s not prime years for anyone in sports, especially a combat sport like boxing. Floyd also comes in at 5' ft 8 and rougly 145 pounds (where he’ll be on fight not is unknown but packing pounds isn’t going to be to much of an advantage as it’ll simply slow him down). Logan on the other hand comes in close to 200 pounds (likewise, we don’t know what he’ll be on fight night) w/ a 4 inch reach advantage. He also comes in at 26 years young. He’s nearly 20 years younger w/ likely 30-40 pounds and 4 inches in reach to his advantage. BUT… what Floyd lacks in age, reach, size and weight he makes up w/ in experience. Mayweather has been boxing since 1996, perfecting his craft and taking out Champions, challengers and names that Logan Paul was likely still in preschool when these folks were winning titles.
So what can Logan do to win? Much will depend on how heavy Floyd comes in. If he decides to put on more weight that he’s used to than that’s going to take his speed advantage down a notch. Floyd is going to have the speed advantage no matter what, but it could be significant or it could be a bit thinner so to speak. Logan is going to have the power advantage. Floyd has made a career out of bobbing and weaving and avoiding damage. Logan likely won’t be the strongest or hardest hitter Floyd has ever fought but he’s going to have the power capable of putting him down. The question will be the same as any Mayweather fight, can his opponent hit him? Conor McGregor was able to land a few shots here and there which should be encouraging to the Paul camp. However Conor has a thunderous left hand and was unable to phaze floyd w/ it. Chances of Paul winning a decision are slim to none so he’s going to have to finish him. Floyd is able to go an hour with his fast pace and continue to hit you with pitter patter punches constantly that eventually wear on you. He’s not a power puncher, but his strength comes by hitting you over and over until you wilt.
Enclosing, the odds will likely be some of the biggest we’ve seen. Can Logan win? The short answer is yes. Will people tune in? You know they will for many reasons, most I’ve already explained. Will I be watching? Even if I didn’t run a website like this, yes i would because despite the miss match the bout has intrigue and mystery. We either get to see the greatest boxer of our Generation do his thing, which is something special to see every time and that time is running out or we get to see probably the biggest upset in combat sports history life on television.
THE FIRST FACE OFF (5/6/21)
THE STAREDOWN w/ LOGAN
Floyd and Logan participated in the first press conference and face off to build the event. The biggest take away was when Floyd said “I know what you did to Japan and you much pay for that” to which Logan replied w/ “I Know what you did to your wife”. Other than these verbal barbs the event was completely uneventful and a real lackluster attempt at selling some pay per views.
MELEE w/ JAKE
The real action came when Floyd left the stage and Logan’s baby brother Jake got in Floyd’s face. They traded words until Paul would snag his hat off his head and taunt him by saying “Got ya hat”. Mayweather and his crew would not take that lightly as they would grab Jake and make a bit of an example of him. The youtube star would end up w/ a ripped shirt and black eye after the altercation. Floyd would be seen running around saying “I’ll kill that motherfucker”. At this point they likely succeeded in selling some pay per views…
THE FIGHT
NO WINNER DECLARED: IT GOES ALL 8 ROUNDS
EXHIBITION BOUT GOES 8 ROUNDS
With the greatest of all time FLoyd Mayweather mixing it up w/ an 0-1 Youtube star most assumed the finish would come within the first few rounds. For whatever reason, though he controlled the action for all 24 minutes Floyd couldn’t finish the young man who outweighed him by 35 pounds. Logan showed poise and moxy but a lack of skill and fluidity that would land him a boxing career. He completely emptied the gas tank at the end of round 1 w/ a 10 second flurry that brought the crowd to their feet but in this flurry he was unable to land one shot on the 44 year old Star. From then on Logan was tired and 5 steps behind.
Could Floyd Have Finished Him?
Many wonder if Floyd simply didn’t pull the trigger on the young youtube star in an effort to put on a show for the crowd. Others even say he knocked him unconscious but held him up. So could Floyd have finished this when he wanted or was Logan to big w/ a better chin than Mayweather anticipated? Did Floyd carry the fight for the show or has his age finally caught up to him and he finds himself in a position where he can’t deal the final blow to a much larger foe? The debate will likely go on forever but what is certain is that Floyd managed to make himself a 100 Million Dollar pay day to fight a guy who’s never won a boxing match in his life. Somehow he parlayed a bout w/ a guy who probably loses 100 out of a 100 times into a Payday that most fighters only dream of. After the bout Floyd said he’s likely done in the ring, whether it be official or Exhibition bouts…
Enclosing: The bout somehow found a way to be entertaining and earn over 1 million pay per view buys which is astounding considering the utter mismatch of this contest. It was billed as an exhibition so the only way to officially “win” was to knock out your opponent and that didn’t happen for either party. Even though there was no “Official” judges you know there were over 1 million around the world who paid $50 for this entertainment. When looking at it logically the fight would have been a decision win for Floyd as he controlled the bout after giving up a round or two early to find his rhythm. He was more active, elusive and landed more shots while making the older Paul brother miss more often than not.
The final piece to this puzzle fittingly includes MMA’s biggest superstar Conor Mcgregor. Did Logan do better against Floyd than the Irish superstar? Not really. Logan wasn’t finished and Conor was, however you got to remember McGregor went 10 rounds and he won 6 or 7 of them. Logan went 8. Conor landed more shots than nearly anyone against the goat, in fact he landed more shots on the king then the legendary Manny Pacquoa. So, who did better? Stats say Conor, However that doens’t take away from the fact that logan did last 8 full rounds. One other thing that must be considered is that Conor fought a 40 year old while Logan battled a 44 year old. That is a much bigger difference than it seems. Watch both bouts and see how much slower Floyd was against logan. The fact is for two guys who had never won a boxing match, they both did a pretty damn good job against the greatest boxer whoever lived but both came up short…
